Happy Olympics!

Kenyan domination, Paula is hurting, Amy Hastings and her Olympic experience, can Gharib medal in the marathon again?, the benefits of bad workouts, Mathew Kisorio tests positive for steroids, Bolt isn't worried,  more Bolt, Shalane, best Olympic moments, world marathon record will be difficult to beat, Tarmoh revisits the Trials dilemma (that she created for herself), top 100 Olympic moments, and finally the lovely Miss Kara Goucher.

Wednesday, July 25th - 0!  Fell into a deep sleep when I got home and slept for 14 hours.  This happens about once a month, and it's my body telling me I need rest.  And boy did I get it!

Thursday, July 26th - 4 miles.  Ran after work since it was overcast and considerably cooler (if you can call 90 degrees cool).  Pretty humid outside, but made my way for an out and back towards Troy.  I also wanted to test my new Ipod shuffle (got a heck of a deal on one, so uploaded some podcasts and gave it a whirl) since I have been running with my bulky Ipod Touch.  Much better.  Anyways, felt ok for the most part, but felt like it was harder than it should have been.  29:17 total (7:26, 7:24, 7:13, 7:04).  Saved 3 miles for Megan, but she was tired and it got too late and the couch was too comfty.  Yeah, yeah, yeah - excuses, I know.

Friday, July 27th - 6 miles.  Crystal dragged me out for an early Forest Park run.  Not much to say other than I was definitely hurting a bit towards the end, but mainly because we picked up the pace 45 seconds/mile.  48:40 on my watch.  Decent morning to run, but we were also done before 7 a.m. which helps :)  Great to see a nice crowd so early in the morning.

Olympics start today!  One of my favorite things to watch.  In honor, I plan on running every day so I don't feel like a complete slacker at some of the best athletes in the world compete for their dreams.

Rock n Roll Chicago Recap

Emmanuel Mutai, Shalane, Galen Rupp's kick, Tyson Gay says 9.7 needed to medal, Lolo, Meb, Haile coming back to Newcastle, Olympic viewer's guide, London odds, and the lovely Miss Kara Goucher.

Wednesday, July 18th - 4 miles.  Ran with Megan late at night.  Did 270 loop with her at 9:40's pace, then did 1 mile solo a little faster.  Hot outside.

Thursday, July 19th - 5 miles.  Dreadmill run at lunch, since I completely slept in and missed a morning run with Crystal.  Started at 7:30 pace and worked my way down.  Didn't feel the best, but I was on a time crunch and needed to be done fast.  4 mile split was 29:04, and I ran my last mile at 6:30 pace (ugh) so 35:34 total.

Friday, July 20th - 0!  Travel day to Chicago, and didn't get a chance to run at lunch because of many meetings.

Saturday, July 21st - 0!  Couldn't get up in the morning to save my life.  Worked the Brooks expo at McCormick Place which was super fun.  Megan and I worked the ticket booth and directed people to the games/prizes section, where Brooks was giving away many gifts.  Worked the run, then headed back for lunch.  Considered running, but it was too hot outside to do anything productive.  Went to the River North street festival, then grabbed dinner before heading to bed.  While I didn't get in any mileage, I was on my feet all day if that counts for anything.

Sunday, July 22nd - 17 miles (2 up, ROCK N ROLL CHICAGO 1/2 MARATHON, 2 down).  Woke up bright and early, and eventually made it to Millenium Park for the race.  Quick 2 mile warmup around the area, then lined up in Corral 1 to get this show on the road.  Nice to see a 1:25 pace group, so thought I would go out with them and ease off as there were no time goals today and was just treating as a long run.  Went through the first 2 miles at 6:30 pace, but pretty much died off since my legs weren't really working and settled into 8 min/mile pace.  Really enjoyed the nice pace, and traversed around the city and worked in a group for awhile.  Ran 1:41, but enjoyed the ride.  Cooled down with Ben, Anne, and Megan on Lakeshore trails when we got back to finish my workout.  Fun times.  39 miles for the week, 116 miles for July, 1111 miles for 2012.

Monday, July 23rd - 3 miles.  Ran late at night.  Legs were pretty tired, and the heat wave has really been bad around home.  106 today, so skipped out on group run.  270 loop - was still 91 at 9 p.m. and HUMID.

Tuesday, July 24th - 4 miles and drills with Crystal.  Got up and ran to the track.  Pretty standard - felt sluggish and my quads are still on fire, but glad to get in an early workout.

Need to lay out some sort of plan this summer, and working on figuring out what the heck I am doing for the fall/winter running.  For now, I am drinking a ton of water and trying to survive this brutal summer!

Summer Days

Interesting NY Times article on Ryan Hall and his faith, Centro, where are you on the global fat scale?, Ryan Hall and his religion, Olympic athletes struggle with careers post Olympics, Lolo, Allyson Felix, Bolt, Yohan Blake, Hall on CNN, world 100 and 200 meter record progressionsgood letsrun interview with Hall, and help pick Hall's London shoes!

Friday, July 13th - 0!  Drove to Kansas City post work and got in really late.  Was famished and opted for a 10 p.m. dinner instead of a 10 p.m. run then dinner.

Saturday, July 14th - 6 miles.  Dreadmill since I finally got up at 9:30 a.m. and was far too hot to run around the city.  Focused on the kid playing catch with his dad in the pool, and was pretty tired.  But fortunately for me, a girl got on the treadmill next to me and I had a challenge.  Breezed through the next few miles no problem with increasing speed.  48 minutes and change

Sunday, July 15th - 4 miles.  Slept in too late, then spent most of the day driving home and napping.  Finally got out around 10 p.m. and did a quick loop around town.  Humid outside, and was rough.  34 minutes, I believe.  Happy Birthday to my little baby Franklin!!!  He turned 2 today :)  38 miles for the week, 80 miles in July, 1072 miles for 2012.

Monday, July 16th - 7 miles.  Big River group run with Tim, Pat, Kim, and Dan.  96 degrees when we ran, sunny, and humid - worst possible conditions.  Well, started out quick but fell back since I didn't want to die outside.  Settled into survival mode and tried to make it.  A couple walk breaks later and a long amount of time, we finally made it back.  Awful run - not doing the 7 mile run until it falls below 80 degrees.  Have no idea of time - we ran forever.

Tuesday, July 17th - 6 miles.  Ran with Crystal at 5:30 a.m.  Really humid outside and nasty, and we did Old Faithful out and back.  Massive stomach problems caused an impromptu break, but made it through ok.  52:30 total, I think?

Was supposed to do drills last night, but just crapped out because it was too hot outside.  Tonight - easy mileage and drills/strides planned, then easy running the rest of the week.  Rock n Roll Chicago is on Sunday, which will be a glorified long run with the hot conditions that await me up north.

K.C. Bound!

Samsung Diamond Meet this weekend, Meb and London, doping in track and field, Bolt not at 100%, Yohan trying to usurp Bolt as fastest man alive, and a RW chat with Emma Coburn.

Tuesday, July 10th Part 2 - 4 miles p.m.  Ran nice and easy.  270 loop and some change.  35-36 minutes total, I believe.

Wednesday, July 11th - 7 miles.  Out and back towards Troy, then another mile tacked on at the end.  Felt pretty lethargic and first, but then got into a better groove.  I had been struggling on runs over 4 miles, so it's nice to get a few that feel ok.  47:13 for the first 6 miles (24:18 (8:11, 8:05, 8:02), 22:54 (7:53, 7:53, 6:58)), forgot to restart my watch for the last mile but it was slow.

Thursday, July 12th - 7 miles + drills and strides.  Warm night, but not awful.  Ran to the track, did a loop around Ebbets Field, out and back to the stoplight near the track, and a couple laps to get in 6 miles.  Did drills and strides, which felt torturous.  Cooled down with Megan on the track to finish, then headed home to stretch for a very long time.  49 minutes for the 6 miles, around 9 minutes for the cooldown mile.

Off to Kansas City this weekend.  Hoping to get in a couple runs while I'm there, and hoping the weather is cooler than the bad conditions we've had here lately...

Hot, hot hot

Mutai running Berlin, steeplechase, interesting article about how to get a sub 2 hour marathon, Olympic champion Michael Johnson, Rupp's 5K chances in London, Ethiopian Olympians, Geena Gall, 6 guys under 12:50 in Paris, Paris recap, and a great article about sex in the Olympics.

Wednesday, July 4th - 6 miles.  Ran the Freedom 4 Mile race downtown because my wonderful employer hooked up some comped entries.  Got Pat, Crystal, and Megan in, and we met downtown bright and early.  Was 85 degrees at race time (7 a.m.) and sunny and humid - not exactly ideal racing conditions.  Plan was to run the first mile relatively hard, then figure it out from there.  Went through the first mile in 6:15 and was about half a mile into the 2nd mile when my body literally started to shut down.  It was brutal.  Opted to just jog it in from there as killing myself to run 26 minutes wasn't my cup of tea, especially on a hot morning.  Ran back to catch Megan, and ran her in.  Even 9 minute pace was rough.  Cooled down with Crystal afterwards (women's winner!), then Local Harvest for brunch!

Thursday, July 5th - 4 miles.  Ran with Mike at night.  95 degrees at 8:30 - ugh.  Another just god awful humid night.  Could barely keep a decent pace.  Out and back towards Troy.  34:16 total (16:43 last 2 miles) - felt like I was running 6:30's out there, but in reality 8:40's.

Friday, July 6th - 5 miles.  Treadmill at lunch.  Legs felt like poop.  Ran for 43:17, I believe.  Travelled to Chi at night after work.  Because of track construction, I had to take the bus up there which was a nice 7 hours in a tiny seat.  Not to mention, in the Carlinville stop, we picked up 5 guys who had literally just gotten out of jail and were headed to Chicago as well.  You can't make this stuff up.  I learned some interesting things on that busride...

Saturday, July 7th - 0!  Crapped out - slept in and it was too late to get in a run with the 100+ temps.  Wedding all day in the subarbs, crashed out at night.

Sunday, July 8th - 14 miles (8 miles a.m., 6 miles p.m.).  Finally a nice day to run - just had amazing weather, and got out around 1 p.m. after the Wimbledon final (go Federer!).  80 degrees and sunny is usually a recipe for disaster, but the temps were almost 25 degrees cooler so it felt like a damn fall day outside.  Kept effort light, and cruised through the Lakeshore run headed north.  Sun was brutal, but it still felt better than the last couple weeks.  Negative split this portion, and felt pretty tired but good.  1:00:42, I believe (~7:36 average).  At night, got home late from the train/bus.  Weather was nice and cool, and finished out my long run with my 6 mile loop around town.  52 minutes and some change.  38 miles this week, 42 miles in July, 1034 miles for 2012.

Monday, July 9th - 6 miles.  Big River group run.  90's, sunny, and humid.  Legs felt like crap, and within a mile I knew this was going to be rough.  Ran with Pat, Craig, Joe, and Gibbs.  We ended up shortening the run because we were all just dead tired, and a couple bathroom breaks later we eventually finished.  Quite possibly the worst run of the year.  I had 53:16 on my watch, but this may not be accurate because I stopped/started and forgot to stop/start on a couple occasions.  Dinner at Three Monkeys afterwards with the group - amazing pizza!

Tuesday, July 10th - 4 miles a.m.  Crystal and I ran this morning, and it was a lot nicer weather than the night before.  5:30 a.m. start, and it went by ok.  Stomach was a mess, and it was a bit uncomfortable.  Have full intentions of getting in some strides and a few more miles at night.

Tarmoh - really????

Pole vaulting travel issues (hahaha), US looks to contend in London in the 1500, Centro and Alberto's boot camp, chasing pre, and a great SI article about the 100 meter runoff.

Monday, July 2nd - 4 miles.  Happy 1000th mile to me!!!  Fallen behind pace for 2000, but will have to work hard to hit the number this year.  Ran a quick mile with Crystal (first time in weeks), then she, Matt, and I did the quick 3 mile loop around Francis Park.  Overcast and warm, but better than it could have been.  32:18 total.

Tuesday, July 3rd - 5 miles.  Ran early with the intention of running with Crystal, but overslept my alarm (new i-phone alarm sucks and is too quiet for me to hear).  Ran a loop on the trails solo and kept it slow.  Was really tired and slightly sore.  40-45 minutes.

So, let's get to the meat and potatoes of this blog post - Jeneba Tarmoh and her decision to drop out of the runoff for the last Olympic spot.  Really disappointed that she dropped out of her chance for Olympic glory.  More disappointed at her passing on a chance (as a running ambassador) to further promote her sport on the biggest stage of all - Monday night prime time network television with no major competition.  She was recently interviewed, and I will end this post with her comments and mine in red.  I am normally not this outspoken about issues, but this really bothered me and I don't understand this rationale whatsoever.

Explain your decision to not do the run-off.
Tarmoh: After we had the discussion the morning of the meeting, and they [USATF officials] pretty much said. “Jeneba, what do you want to do, forfeit or do you want to run?” I said, “Are they my only two options?” They said, “Yes.” So I said, “I will run.” But throughout the day I thought about it. I ran that 100, and I did the victory lap, and I got my medal, and then they say I have to run again—after I ran the 100 and the 200, the three rounds. I had a whole lot of emotions and I was heartbroken. In my mind I felt that my joy was kind of taken away—after I had gotten third—and my legs were tired. It was more of my emotions. It would have been unfair to myself to go out there not whole-heartedly.
Not an excuse.  Allyson Felix ran the same races you did.  "My legs were tired" - well, who's legs aren't tired at this point???
Have you spoken to Allyson?
Tarmoh: I spoke to Allyson. I said, “You know, Allyson, my heart is not into it. I don’t want to do a run-off or a coin flip. You just take it and I just wish you luck in the 100, the 200, the 4 x 11, and 4 x 400. You trained hard for it.” I called her last night and told her everything how I felt.
"My heart is not into it" - that's because you have no heart, clearly.  No desire to run for your country, no desire to achieve personal glory, no desire for another opportunity for a personal best.  What exactly are you running for?  I know this is unfair, but I am fairly certain that any elite athlete in your position would have run, including your main competitor (Felix).  IT'S THE OLYMPICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What else have you been training for your entire career???????
Were you 100 percent sold on the process USATF set up to settle break the tie?
Tarmoh: Throughout the process I didn’t want to run again. It didn’t feel right. I am a prayerful person and I prayed and just the thought of running again, my heart wasn’t in it. I don’t know how to explain it. But once I made the final decision, I was at peace. I smiled and laughed for the first time in days.
Let's see how you feel years from now.  "My heart wasn't in it" - why did you even compete in the trials?
But you gave up an Olympic spot?
Tarmoh: It is hard, I must admit. It is not an easy decision giving up an Olympic spot. I did train really hard. At the end of the day just as long I know in my heart that I prayed to God and this is what God wants me to do. I can’t be mad. If they [people] have anything against me, if they are upset at me, I can’t really say anything.
Could you have been at your best in a runoff?
Tarmoh: I don’t think I would have been at my best if I would have gone out there tonight. I doubt I would have been at my best.
You'll never know now.
Why then decide to do it?
Tarmoh: At the time I can safely say I felt like I was being pushed into a corner. They just said, ‘Jeneba, you have five minutes, two options, run or give it up.' In the heat of the moment anyone would say, run. But with time you are going to think about it some more and weigh more options. I said, What is the worst that can happy? If you’re happy why are you going to make decision that will make you unhappy.
Why would trying to settle a tie make you unhappy?  I am absolutely dumbfounded.  Don't you need to know, in your heart and mind, who truly is deserving of the last spot????  Where's the fight???
Who are "they"?
Tarmoh: It was…I don’t know their names. Max [Siegel, USATF CEO] and Stephanie [Hightower, USATF president]. They didn’t really push me. They just said these are your options. They didn’t say you had to choose right now, but I felt I had to.
What are your feelings on the whole process?
Tarmoh: They [USATF] tried their hardest to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. It’s hard; they don’t have procedures for situations like this, but with the time given, I think they did do a good job. I think if they had a procedure for dead heats before this track meet and before we ran the final, then it would have been easier on Allyson and myself. It was hard on us.
Only part of this interview I agreed with.  USTAF sh*t the bed on this one and caused a lot more hoopla and pressure, but surely the outcome was obvious
Are you still friends with Allyson?
Tarmoh: Yes, I have the utmost respect for Allyson. She is my friend, sister, competitor, and training partner. I have no ill feelings toward. I wish her the best of luck and Godspeed.
You will be going to London to run on the 4 x 100 relay team?
Tarmoh: Yes.
No doubt?
Tarmoh: No doubt about it, but you never know what happens.
Did you sleep well last night?
Tarmoh: I slept perfect. It  was the best sleep I had since the final [in the 100 meter].
Let's see how you feel after the 100 meter final in London.  I sincerely hope you can say this years from now
When did you make the decision to not do the run-off?
Tarmoh: I was at the track [Hayward]  yesterday. It was probably three or four o’clock. I spoke to my agent and came to my conclusion that it is done with. I tried to think some more but I was too happy.
You mentioned previously that you were “robbed”. Do you still feel that way?
Tarmoh: I wouldn’t call it robbed. I feel like I would just say I could not fully experience my joy.
Did you speak with anyone special when making the decision?
Tarmoh: I prayed. I can’t say I did it myself. I do have my family members pray. And I went to my room, opened my Bible, mediated, said my prayers. It was just me having a conversation.
What did your family tell you?
Tarmoh: My family said do what you feel is right. Whatever makes you happy. When I was leaning for the runoff, they said, “Then go out and run your butt off. What is the worst that can happen? Just thinking about it, though, I was crying on the phone to my dad. How can I run off when I can’t fathom why I have to run again? But after I made the decision, they said, “We trust you, and if you prayed about it then everything is going to work out the way it is supposed to.”

I'm alive...

Central Park!

Wesley Korir and Ryan Hall building a hospital, OT Men's 1500, Galen Rupp.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.  I'm back, and so is my running (what lack of).  Sorry to be so far out of the loop, but my mess of a travel schedule has killed my blogging and running.  And it isn't getting much better, although the Olympic Trials has helped some.

June 4th - June 10th - 38.5 miles.  Was in New Orleans and got to run on the riverfront as well as the French Quarter.  Really hot and humid, and ended up dreadmilling a couple runs.  NOLA was great, but killed all my energy with lack of sleep and travel.

June 11th - June 17th - 22 miles.  Highlight was 6x300 (2:03, 2:04, 2:06, 2:05, 2:04, 1:59) while feeling like complete crap but made it through.  Went to Peoria for the weekend for Father's Day, but crapped out of Steamboat.  Got my butt kicked in golf instead, so got in some mileage.

June 18th - June 25th - 20 miles.  I really had to think about when I actually did run.  It wasn't much, sadly.  Really struggled to get out the door and took more days off then ran.  Ran the Pride 5K with Tim in Tower Grove Park, and died after the first mile.  It was a decent summer day to run with shade on a great course, and just crapped out completely.  I should have won the race (18:51 was winning time), but 20:30 in a 5K doesn't win races.  Yes, that bad.

June 26th - June 30th - 11 miles.  Yes you read that right.  NYC for the week, but got in some awesome runs with Anne in Central Park, one of my favorite places in the world to run.  Almost pulled the traveling trifecta of running in Central Park, Lakeshore, and home in one day (slight layover in Chi), but crapped out.  Don't feel too bad about my sh*tty mileage, since we walked a good 10 miles a day around NYC.  Weather was perfect and just loved being out and about.  118 stellar miles in June, 992 miles for 2012.

Sunday, July 1st - 4 miles.  Ran late at night with Tim.  0 energy, and did a loop around town at a pretty slow pace.  Despite the record high heat, we had a somewhat decent night to run with a breeze to keep it cool.  Splits were: 10:04, 9:38, 9:35, 8:56.

Group run tonight, then Chicago this weekend for a wedding.  The big question is if I can summon the strength to get in an early Lakeshore run.  Stay tuned...
